CAWS initiated a program to monitor vernal pools across a spectrum of developed landscapes. Reference pools were identified in areas protected from development pressure. Similarly, monitoring pools were identified in areas where development in and around the pools was anticipated. Inspections began pre-development, and continued annually for 10-15 years after a property was developed. The goal of the program was to understand how pool-breeding amphibians respond to varying degrees of development in the surrounding landscape, in order to advise future project design to limit these impacts. This program was concluded in 2020 and a summary report was prepared discussing the findings (see link above).
